Autumn in England
Redhill and Reigate, UK
This usually bustling Belfry Shopping Centre in Redhill comes to a standstill at 11am on Tuesday 11th November when hundreds of local residents join the Mayor and Lady Mayor, Councilors and serving and ex-service Personnel, police officers and Army, Royal Navy and RAF cadets for a display of community remembrance.
The occasion is commemorated with the dropping of 50,000 poppies from the ceiling of the Belfry, and included the playing of the Last Post, as well as readings of Flanders Field and the Burma Prayer.
This year marked the 70th Anniversary of D-Day in June and the centenary of World War 1 in August. On every Remembrance Sunday, there are remembrance service Parades and wreath-laying events, followed by church services in all the towns and villages to remember the servicemen and women who lost their lives in recent and current conflicts as well as those who lost their lives in the catastrophic events of the two world wars.
It is not known exactly when St Mary's church in Reigate was founded but it is assumed to be in the time of the Norman Conquest. The first written record of St Mary's was in the 1160s when the church, "Crechesfeld" - church field or church on a hill, was presented to the Augustinian Priory of St Mary Overie.
We enjoyed a wonderful meal with our dear friends Elias and Linda before they returned to America after many years overseas.
We spent a delightful time with the De Gromoboys. We originally met them while visiting eastern Europe and immediately became friends.
After visiting the De Gromoboys, we took city buses through London to see the Christmas lights.
Oxford Street and Regents Street were especially lighted up for the Christmas season.
